Cataract Surgery

www.nucleusinc.com Cataract Eye Surgery. This 3D medical animation depicts the phacoemulsification and extracapsular removal of a cataract (cloudy lens), and the placement of an artificial lens. The lens of the eye is responsible for focusing images onto the back of the eye. It is normally transparent. As a normal part of aging, the lens begins to cloud and causes a gradual, painless loss in vision. Cataract removal is most often performed to better examine the back of the eye when monitoring for damage from certain diseases such as diabetes or glaucoma and to improve vision. There are two main types of cataract removal. The large majority of cataract surgeries are performed using the phacoemulsification technique. During the phacoemulsification technique an ultrasound probe breaks the cloudy lens into tiny fragments. The fragments are vacuumed out through a tiny incision. An intraocular lens implant is then inserted to replace the natural lens that was removed. Because the incision is tiny, stitches are often not necessary and visual improvement is usually noted relatively soon after surgery. During the extracapsular technique the cataract is removed as one entire piece. This requires a larger incision and stitches. An intraocular lens implant (artificial lens) is inserted to replace the natural lens that was removed. Recovery is usually slower, due to the larger incision. The stitches sometimes need to be removed, which is usually done in the office. After both

Iran and The West (1/3): The Man Who Changed The World – BBC (Feb 7, 2009)

www.bbc.co.uk ** Documentary series marking the 30th anniversary of the Iranian Revolution. Militant Islam enjoyed its first modern triumph with the arrival in power of Ayatollah Khomeini in Iran in 1979. In this series of three programmes, key figures tell the inside story. Former US president Jimmy Carter talks on television for the first time about the episode that, more than any other, led American voters to eject him from the presidency. Iran’s seizure of the US embassy in Tehran and the holding of its staff for 444 days took more and more of Carter’s time and energy. His final days in office were dominated by desperate attempts to secure the release of the embassy hostages. Those who sat in the White House with him, planning how to rescue the hostages, how to negotiate their release and, finally, wondering whether anything could be rescued from the disaster, all tell their part in the story. Other contributors include former vice president Walter Mondale, ex-deputy secretary of state Warren Christopher and former national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski. The other side of the story is told by top Iranians: Ayatollah Khomeini’s close adviser, Grand Ayatollah Montazeri; his first foreign minister, Ebrahim Yazdi; his negotiator with the US, Sadeq Tabatabai; and the founder of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, Mohsen Rafiqdoust. aired: BBC Two 090207, 090212 (england only), 090213 (except England), BBC One 090214, BBC Four 090704

Geeta Dutt – Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Situm – Kaagaz Ke Phool [1959]

Kaagaz Ke Phool, (Hindi: कागज़ के फूल; translit. Kaagaz Ke Phool), is a 1959 Hindi film produced and directed by Guru Dutt, who also played the lead role in the film. The film was a box office disaster of its time but was later resurrected as a world cinema cult classic in the 1980s. The film’s music was composed by SD Burman and the notable lyrics were written by Kaifi Azmi, giving hits like Waqt ne Kiya Kya Haseen Situm, sung by Geeta Dutt. In the 2002 Sight & Sound critics’ and directors’ poll, Kaagaz Ke Phool was ranked at #160 among the greatest films of all time………….. Many claim that the film is semi-autobiographical of Guru Dutt and that he portrayed his angst in the movie. At the time of production of the film, Guru Dutt’s marriage to Geeta Dutt was under strain due to his liking for Waheeda Rehman. This was openly known causing Guru Dutt’s personal life to resemble that of the protagonist in the movie. However, the forecast of his own (Guru Dutt’s) death, to parallel the sad and imminent death of the protagonist in the film, is debatable. Another explanation for the inspiration is Guru Dutt’s association with Gyan Mukherjee, the famous 1940s director whose Qismet (1941) had made him into a household name. The life and subsequent failures of Mukherjee, whom Guru Dutt had joined in 1950, influenced him deeply. Many think that Kaghaz ke Phool was based on Gyan Mukherjee’s life and failures, as Guru Dutt’s previous film Pyaasa had been dedicated to

GSG9 German Special Forces

Germany’s legendary Grenzschutzgruppe 9 or GSG 9 is a pioneer of modern CounterTerrorism. It is considered to be one of finest CounterTerrorist units in existence and is the role model of numerous units around the globe. Created in 1973, Grenzschutzgruppe 9 (which translates to “Border Control Group 9″) is a special unit of the Bundesgrenzschutz (“Federal Border Police”) or BGS. It is administered by Bundesgrenschutz West and is currently based in Hangelar, near Bonn. GSG 9 may be tasked by the BGS command to assist its own regular units as well as federal agencies such as the BKA (Bundeskriminalamt, or “Federal Criminal Agency”) and the Bundeszollverwaltung (Federal Customs Administration) and local agencies by request. GSG 9 will also provide support and consultation to the different states of the Federation (Bundeslander) and the Foreign Office. GSG 9’s primary task is hostage rescue. It is also tasked with handling extremely violent crimes such as terrorism, kidnapping and extortion as well as developing, testing and evaluating tactics and techniques for this purpose. Being a police force gives GSG 9 operators national authority and powers of arrest. It also allows them to conduct long term infiltration of terrorist groups. This facilitates the execution of preemptive CounterTerrorist operations in addition to their “regular” tasks such as hostage rescue and criminal apprehension. Structure GSG 9 numbers around 200 to 250 operators and is divided into the following

Takashi MURAKAMI ~~ Birth of SUPERFLAT

Superflat is a postmodern art movement founded by the artist Takashi Murakami, which is influenced by manga and anime. It is also the name of a 2001 art exhibition, curated by Murakami, that toured West Hollywood, Minneapolis and Seattle. In this short piece, Murakami explains about the SUPERFLAT concept and what he means by that. It has a lot to do with how he sees Japanese society today and how it has evolved since the end of the Pacific war in 1945 with the devastating attacks by the US using atomic weapons. A central influence on the concept of ‘Superflat’ is the Japanese cartoon culture of manga where enthusiasts are lured into a magical world that is divorced from reality. The insistent two-dimensionality of manga often results in an overall patterning of colors and shapes which provides a parallel space in which to escape from the pressures and expectations of society at large. All of the artists in ‘Superflat’ work between the established boundaries of their respective genres, for instance where fine art photography meets commercial photography, where painting meets illustration, or where fashion meets theatrical costuming.the ’supe’” in ‘Superflat’ not only emphasizes the planar qualities of much of the work, but also denotes a special, charged characteristic or attitude. With ‘Superflat’ Murakami suggests a broader definition of contemporary art in japan and the wide range of activity within the exhibition can be seen as a direct challenge to the traditional
